Use this prayer to help your church become more accommodating so newcomers begin to call your church ‘home’.
Quick Prayer
Please pray aloud:
God, when a guest walks in, help our regular members—not just the leaders—feel the weight of responsibility to stop the conversations they’re having so they can introduce themselves to the new person. All so the newcomers at our church can become regular members, too.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Full Prayer
Please pray aloud: God, help the guests at my church become regulars at my church! For everything our guests need to change in order to make our church a central part of their life, let the change begin with us—
How can we change our appearance, Lord? Whether it’s a fresh coat of paint or new flooring or different furnishings, make us mindful of our first impression. If these changes prove costly, help us sacrifice to make it happen. Give us a lavish heart, like the father who kill the fattened calf for his prodigal son!
How can we change our behavior, Lord? Some of our guests want a sincere conversation, and some of them want a bit of anonymity, so give us discernment to recognize the difference. When a guest walks in, help our regular members—not just the leaders—feel the weight of responsibility to stop the conversations they’re having so they can introduce themselves to the new person. Give us a hospitable heart, like Lydia had for Paul.
For everything our guests need to change in order to make our church a central part of their life, begin with us.

How can we better explain our worship service, Lord? Help us explain what’s happening from moment to moment, rather than assuming understanding. Make us accommodating, God, from the prayers to the readings to the music to the sermon. Give us the patience to speak in longhand for our newcomers. Give us a heart to teach, like Philip had for the Ethiopian.
How can we better identify their next step, Lord? Help us create a clear and simple next step for our guests so we can get to know them better and mobilize them in the mission of the church. If it means asking for less instead of more, show us, Father. And if it means finding other mediums to communicate with our regulars so we can simplify and clarify our bulletin, give us that insight. Give us the clear direction of a leader, like Peter to the crowds at Pentecost.
Finally, God, give us the heart of a Savior, that none of these little ones should be lost.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
