Use this prayer from our series of prayers on spiritual warfare to help your church overcome the temptations and addictions of the evil one.

Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:
God Most High, I intercede to you now for anyone at my church who is struggling with temptations and addictions. Addiction is idolatry, Lord—and we will have no other gods before you! Your Son has set us free, make us free indeed.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:
God Most High, I intercede to you now for anyone at my church who is struggling with temptations and addictions.

Your Word calls the devil a tempter—He uses the lust of the eyes and the lust of the flesh to entice us away from you. His desire is to make the temptation an addiction, where we lose our self–control and are mastered by and dependent on something other than you. Addiction is idolatry, Lord—and we will have no other gods before you!

Whether it’s pornography, alcohol, nicotine, drugs, adultery, gambling, excess in video games or social media or shopping or food, I speak against all the tools of the evil one. For freedom you have set us free, Lord, do not let us be enslaved again. Your Son has set us free, make us free indeed.

Specifically, Lord, I pray for… name the people in your church who you know are struggling with temptations and addictions.

Addiction is idolatry, Lord—and we will have no other gods before you!
—Pray for Your Church

If any in my church currently struggle with addiction, teach them to pray. Move by your Spirit and show them this is not just a physical or emotional battle, open their eyes to see that this is warfare in the unseen spiritual realm. Teach them to call on you and ask for a strength they do not have. Protect them by your Spirit and your holy angels, even now. I claim the promise of your Word that you will not let them be tempted beyond what they can bear and you will provide an escape, in Jesus’ name!

Help them identify the pattern where temptation begins. Help them transform their mind, and to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. In their struggles against sin, remind them that your perfect Son was tempted just as they are. Remind them that forgiveness and victory is already theirs through his perfect life.

I pray also for the loved ones affected by these addictions, who are hurt by the consequences of their actions. Strengthen them and give them discernment to know how to respond to their loved ones in the chains of addiction. Help them to not be enablers, but to not become too harsh, either. Help them speak the truth in love, and use them as you see fit to bring about freedom.

Lead us not into temptation!

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
