A Prayer Against Slander, Gossip, and Negative Speech

Please pray aloud:

Heavenly Father, I come to you now asking you to protect my church from all slander. In its place, may we do as your Word exhorts us and only speak what is good for building others up.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:

God, protect my church from all divisive speech, that the devil may not gain a foothold among us.

Protect us from slander, and any lie from the devil, the Father of all lies. Forgive us for the times we bear false witness. Help us to only speak as your Son did, bearing witness to the truth.

Protect us from gossip, or any time we malign another person’s name. Forgive us for the times we speak negatively of others with those who are neither part of the problem nor the solution. Help us to follow the directive of your Son and speak first to those who give us offense, involving others only when reconciliation cannot be found.

Holy Spirit, inhabit the speech of our church like you inhabit our praise.

Protect us from all negative or toxic speech. Forgive us for the times that cursing flows from the same lips you’ve ordained for praise. Help us give thanks in all circumstances.

In the authority of Jesus’ name, I ask that all slander, all gossip, all complaining, and all cursing be silenced in our church! In our hallways, our parking lot, our small groups, our phone calls, cast it out, Lord!

Move us to guard our mouths and keep watch over our lips. Teach us to bridle our tongue and have mastery over it. That our words would only build others up. That our words would only give grace to those who hear it. That our words would only console, edify, and bless.

Holy Spirit, inhabit the speech of our church like you inhabit our praise!
