Use this prayer to help you and your church slow down during a busy Christmas season so your hearts are ready to celebrate his birth.
Quick Prayer
Please pray aloud: Like so many people in my church, I’m caught up in the rush of the holiday season.
Help us to reduce and remove the extracurricular so we spend more time in prayer. More time in Scripture. More time in your house of worship. More time in serving and giving to our neighbor.
Until our hearts are bursting in anticipation to adore him on Christmas Eve.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Full Prayer
Please pray aloud:
Wonderful Counselor, I come to you now asking for your counsel.
Like so many people in my church, I’m caught up in the rush of the holiday season. We’re running from school programs to staff parties on busy roads in bad weather. There’s a hectic and frenetic pace to the season that contradicts the birth of the Prince of Peace. How can our hearts prepare him room when we’re so busy, Lord? We’ve traded a silent night for a chaotic season, and we need your forgiveness.
O come, Emmanuel, and ransom us from this schedule that holds us captive. Free us from the demands and expectations of the season. How can we slow down, God? How can we find freedom? Would you show us? If it’s buying less, give us restraint. If it’s going to fewer events, give us clarity. If it’s less Christmas movies or baking or cards, confront us.
We’ve traded a silent night for a chaotic season, Lord, and we need your forgiveness.

But it’s not rest for rest’s sake, God. It’s slowing down for you. So, in all of our elimination, don’ let us cut you out. Help us to reduce and remove the extracurricular so we spend more time in prayer. More time in Scripture. More time in your house of worship. More time in serving and giving to our neighbor. All so that our hearts are bursting in anticipation to adore him on Christmas Eve.
How silently, how silently, your wondrous gift is given, God. Make my church meek enough to receive him still.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
