Use this prayer to help your pastor study, write, and preach the sermon God wants your church to hear this Sunday.

Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:
Heavenly Father, I come to you now to lift up my pastor and his sermon this coming Sunday. Help him in his study, his writing, and his editing, that Christ crucified and risen would be clearly proclaimed. And when he preaches, God, let your Word be a fire in his bones, that it may also burn within our hearts. Make this Sunday’s sermon a demonstration of your Holy Spirit’s mighty power!

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:
Heavenly Father, I come to you now to lift up my pastor and his sermon this coming Sunday.

In his preparation and study, open his eyes with wisdom and revelation into the text, that he may also open our eyes. Show him what you want to say and to whom you want to say it.

In his writing, help him to remove all distractions, that he may quickly organize his thoughts and ideas. Make his writing efficient and joyful, make it bold and clear. Help him craft the right words in the right way, that the hearts of all would be laid bare and Christ crucified and risen would be clearly proclaimed.

Help him in the editing process, Father. Cutting what is redundant or excessive. Refining what is essential. Remove any selfish motive, any rivalry or envy, any deception, that he may rightly handle your Word of truth. I join with the Psalmist and ask that the words of his mouth and the meditation of his heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our Rock and Redeemer.

Make this Sunday’s sermon a demonstration of Holy Spirit’s mighty power.
—Pray for Your Church

As you work in my pastor, God, work in us. Prepare us to hear what you have to say, Lord, like the rain softens the earth for a seed. Make us ready and penitent, submissive and eager, that your Word may accomplish the purpose for which you sent it.

And when he preaches, God, let your Word be a fire in his bones, that it may also burn within our hearts. Let us not be impressed by his eloquence or mannerisms, but by the grace and truth of your Word. Let your Word be living and active in every sentence, every word! Give faith to those who do not believe. Strengthen the faith of those who do. Make this Sunday’s sermon a demonstration of your Holy Spirit’s mighty power!

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
