Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Romans 15:7

A prayer for the people who have visited your church to come back and for your church to help new people feel welcomed and included.

Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:

Most High God, I come to you now interceding for the new people at my church. Whatever brought them through our doors the first time, God, I pray you give them a heart to come back this weekend. In the same way, give our average member a new sense of responsibility to initiate a conversation with people they don’t know or don’t look like them.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:

Most High God, I come to you now interceding for the new people at my church.

Some of them were invited by a friend. Others came because they saw our building or a sign or an advertisement. Whatever brought them through our doors the first time, God, I pray you give them a heart to come back this weekend. Did not your Son say that no one can come to your Son unless you first draw them, Father? So draw them again, Lord!

Stir in their spirit by your Spirit, even now, and give them a deep sense of belonging and acceptance. Remove any anxiety that comes with being in unfamiliar places or feeling like an outsider. Create in them a longing to be with us again, giving thanks and celebrating in your house and in your presence, that’s greater than any apprehension they feel.

It’s an unusual request, Lord, but give them a dissatisfaction with the the typical lures of Sunday morning—sleeping in, long brunches, television, golf. Making a plan to set aside time for their Sunday morning is a new habit for them, God, so give them a strength to do so. Didn’t your Son say that the pleasures of life are like a thorn that choke out faith? Remove the thorns, God! Give them a heart of wisdom to set aside all that cannot satisfy and to seek you first above all things.

Does not your Word say we are no longer strangers?
—Pray for Your Church

And for my church, God, I pray for our role in all of this. Help us be accommodating to the new people, welcoming them as you have welcomed us. Open our eyes to see the customs or traditions we do that need explanation. Does not your Word say we are no longer strangers? Give our average member a new sense of responsibility to initiate a conversation with people they don’t know or don’t look like them. Help us streamline our new member process, and make it compelling as possible for these new people.

Integrate these new people into the life of my church, Lord. All that our church may continue to grow, God. Not for our glory, but yours. Not for our kindgom, but yours. Not for our name, but yours and your alone!

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
