In part three of a series of prayers about Scripture, this prayer will help your church hunger for God’s Word.

Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:
O God, my God, make my church hunger for your Word! Let nothing else satisfy us until we plunge ourselves into the pages of Scripture. Let every pleasure and past time taste hollow and empty until we drink deep of your promises, your commands, your truth.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:
O God, my God, make my church hunger for your Word!

As the prophet Amos declared, there is a famine in our land, not from a lack of rain, but from hearing your Word. We wake up and leave your Word unopened. We busy ourselves through the day without looking at a page of Scripture. We lie down to sleep and our Bibles remain on our shelves. Slowly and steadily, the decay sets in—we begin to live our lives in ways that seem right to us but dishonor you, with heartache and destruction soon to follow. Rightly you have spoken—we are destroyed when we lack your knowledge. Forgive us, O Lord!

Like King Josiah tore his robes because your Word was neglected by the people, we repent, O Lord.

This day, make my church pant for your Word as a deer pants for water in a dry and parched land. Overwhelm us with thirst, God. Let nothing else satisfy us until we plunge ourselves into the pages of Scripture. Let every pleasure and past time taste hollow and empty until we drink deep of your promises, your commands, your truth. Quench us with your voice, O God!

This day, make my church pant for your Word as a deer pants for water in a dry and parched land.
—Pray for Your Church

Then, just as you speak to us, let your Word remain with us. Let your Word dominate our thoughts and the meditation of our hearts. Let it live and actively stir our souls! Let your Word guide and guard our thoughts and actions, that we may both hearers and doers of your Word, Father.

Show us why your Word is more precious than silver.
Show us why your Word is sweeter than honey.
Show us why your Word is greater than daily bread.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
