Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:

O God our Creator, your Word tells us you have made all people on the earth. So let my church reflect the diversity of the community you’ve called us to reach. As your Word declares, let your cross destroy any dividing wall and any hostility among us, that there may be one, new humanity in Jesus.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:

O God our Creator, your Word tells us you have made all people on the earth. And you’ve promised that all nations will stream to Mt. Zion. I know there will be a day when a great multitude that no one can number from every nation, every tribe, and every language will worship you at your throne.

God, let my church reflect the diversity of the community you’ve called us to reach.

Forgive us for anything we’ve done, intentionally or unintentionally, that made others feel excluded. Give us eyes to see where we’ve allowed any preferences of a majority group to exclude others, and uproot those barriers. Forgive us for any hatred or prejudice we may harbor for another group of people. As you forgive us, let us forgive one another, that there may be reconciliation in the church. As your Word declares, let your cross destroy any dividing wall and hostility among us, that there may be one, new humanity in Jesus.

God, let my church reflect the diversity of the community you’ve called us to reach.
—Pray for Your Church

As the Apostle Paul exclaimed, let our church display your multicolored wisdom, Lord! Black, white, brown, rich, poor, young, old—let us all gather together in unity at this church. Not to fill some sort of quota or manmade criteria, but to always ask ourselves, “Who is not here yet?” to fulfill your great commission. That people come through our doors and wonder how this diversity happened, and our only answer is Jesus.

But I do not pray for assimilation, that is, asking others to come and be like us. Rather, I pray for integration, that we ask others to come and be with us. That we may celebrate the unique qualities and perspective each of us brings to your Church. That our own personal friendships begin to expand into new cultures. That the leadership in the church may be shared.

Let your Son be glorified in our diversity, God.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known…
