In this first part of a series of prayers about Scripture, this prayer will help your church submit to Scripture as the very Word of God.

Quick Prayer

Please pray aloud:
Lord, I come to you now asking you to help my church submit to your Word. I confess that we are, by nature, rebellious, Lord. We want to be the authority over your Word, rather than letting it be the authority over us.

We submit to your Word, not just the parts that encourage and bless us, but for the parts that challenge us and the parts that we disagree with or don’t understand. Help us to hold every page sacred and, as the Apostle Paul wrote, to accept it not as a human word, but as it actually is, your very Word, God.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Full Prayer

Please pray aloud:
Lord, I come to you now asking you to help my church submit to your Word.

I confess that we are rebellious by nature, Lord. Our flesh longs to put ourselves first and over all. Our ears itch to satisfy our selfish motives. We want to be in authority over your Word, rather than letting it be the authority over us.

But we call you, Lord, because that is who you are! Let your Word be like an edict that reigns here in my church, O wise King!

Let your Word be like an edict that reigns here in my church, O wise King!
—Pray for Your Church

We submit to your Word, not just the parts that encourage and bless us, but for the parts that challenge and convict. We submit to your Word, not just the parts we understand and that fit our agenda, but the parts that are difficult to fathom or we disagree with. Far be it for us to change one word or line of your precious Word, Lord. Help us to hold every page of Scripture sacred and, as the Apostle Paul wrote, to accept it not as a human word, but as it actually is, your very Word, God.

Just as your Word encourages, blesses, and guides us, let it teach, rebuke, correct, and train us, that we may grow in your righteousness. Make us that blessed people who not only hear your Word, O God, but keep it. That your Word may be proven true and serve as a refuge for us, uniting us for generations to come. We join the Apostle Peter and declare, you have the words of eternal life, where else can we go?

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
